A Winter Day in Fairbanks - Make it stand out Ice Skating at Tanana Lakes: This is an amazing (and free) outdoor ice rink. By late December or early January, the city plows a rink and ~ ¼ mile loop around Tanana Lakes for the public to use. It only gets maintained a few times per winter, so it can get bumpy or snowy after a big storm but it’s worth checking out! You’ll also see people ice fishing on the lake. I love coming here at sunset or with a headlamp after dark. Park next to the Alaska Dream Adventures Kiosk for easiest access to the ice. It’s a great option to go for a walk, bike, or cross country ski without the snow machine traffic found on the Goldstream Trails. You can often see moose here, so be alert. These trails also connect to the Alaska Dog Mushing Association trails, so keep dogs on leash to avoid an encounter with dog teams. They are regularly groomed for both classic and skate, which means no dogs, no walking, and no biking. There are many miles of trail options as seen on this map, and there are a good number of trails with lights. If that’s the case and it’s clear outside, I recommend driving east towards Delta Junction (~2 hours). You’ll get beautiful views of the Eastern Alaska Range along the way and can continue driving south past Delta Junction if you have the time to actually drive through the breathtaking mountains. There are hundreds of miles of trails around Fairbanks. Some are actually groomed, and some are used by snow machines which help pack down the trails as well. Dogs are allowed on all of these trails since they are multi-use, but please keep them leashed due to the sled dog teams that regularly train here. Make sure to bring a head lamp if you plan to stay out after dark! Trail Forks is most commonly used in Fairbanks, and some trails can be found here. You can rent bikes from Goldstream Sports, and you can connect to the trail system right from their parking lot! If they’re strong enough, you can see them from just about anywhere in town. Rockwall Trail - Make it stand out We started at the Paint Pots trailhead and hiked south to the Floe Lake trailhead. This allowed us to start out easier and have less elevation gain overall. We decided to hitchhike at the beginning and drop our car off at the end before we started hiking. This was one of my favorite pictures from the trip, taken at Helmet Falls Campground. You could walk to Helmet Falls (one of the largest in Canada) about 1/2 mile from the campground, a side trip from the normal trail. Shortly after leaving Helmet Falls Campground, you’ll start ascending towards Rockwall Pass. This is a lot of elevation gain, but is the only pass for the day if camping at Tumbling Creek Campground like we did. Day 3 of hiking was our shortest day at only 5 miles, but it did contain another pass with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain: Tumbling Pass. This was 12 miles in total, starting the morning with 2,500 feet elevation gain up and over Numa Pass, the 3rd and final pass of the trip. Once you get to Floe Lake, it’s 6 miles of downhill. This was not the ideal itinerary, but it ended up being manageable. If you have 5 days, I would recommend getting a site at Floe Lake Campground. It was pretty cold in the hut, but it had lots of reading materials and emergency supplies available. There also is an outhouse. There is a lot of brush on this trail so I could imagine it gets overgrown, but it wasn’t bad when we did this trail in late August. It was a rainy summer, however, which resulted in tons of mud on the trail. It’s pretty steep so expect to move slowly. Once you get to the knoll, make sure to take a right. This is a 1,200 foot climb over scree and boulder fields to get over the pass into the next valley. You start by hiking directly across the valley on tundra with some creek crossings until you get to the base of the glacier. Probably because it was earlier in the morning, but this glacier was much icier than Penny Royal. It follows a creek (lots of salmon in the summer) through a forest and leads you to these unbeatable views. The trail is well-packed/groomed in the winter making it very manageable, and you can connect it with other trails for some cross country skiing. The only trail I have done so far is to Worthington Glacier. The glacier can be seen from the highway, but it’s worth the short walk along the paved path (summer only) to the viewing platform, where you can enjoy views of the lake at the toe of the glacier. It didn’t take long for it to get within 100 yards of us, so we biked up the hill before it got too close. It can get crowded here, so it was nice to have the place to ourselves. If biking isn’t tiring enough, you can also hike from the road. This would make for an amazing bikepacking trip and allow you to get all the way to Wonder Lake at Mile 92. They also have bike racks on the buses. You can buy a bus ticket (~$30/person), and take a bus one direction to shorten the bike ride. However, there’s a 2-mile hike to get around the landslide and continue your bike ride. I haven’t done the hike, but after scouting the first section of it, it appears you are on a gravel bar the entire time, so it wouldn’t be difficult to push your bike, and you could maybe even ride it at times. I don’t think the road is maintained beyond the landslide, but there also aren’t vehicles or buses on it. We stayed in the Frame cabin (the smallest one), which has two bunk beds, wood stove, kitchen, small table, and an outhouse. The wood stove quickly turns the place into a sauna if you’re not careful. I brought a -20 degree sleeping bag to be safe, and that was definitely overkill.
